My Experience as a Media and Communications Intern at Be United

Hello! I’m Mati Namory, a 4th-year PR and Marketing student, and I’d like to share my experience interning as a Media and Communications Assistant at Be United. It’s been an incredible journey, and I’ve learned so much throughout my time with the organisation.

From day one, I was welcomed into a team that was amazing. The atmosphere at Be United was incredibly supportive and constructive, allowing me to take on challenges with confidence. The team’s collaborative spirit created an environment where I could learn and grow professionally. Working alongside such passionate individuals not only enhanced my skill set but also deepened my understanding of the arts sector and the power of diversity in the creative industries.

One of the most enjoyable aspects of my time at Be United was working as an Event Production Assistant at the 10th anniversary event. It was an exciting opportunity to be part of celebrating such an important milestone for the organisation. I had the chance to contribute creatively while learning a great deal about event planning, coordination, and execution. Seeing everything come together was incredibly rewarding, and it gave me hands-on insight into the intricate details that go into making an event successful.

During my internship, I had the chance to develop key organisational skills, which helped me stay on top of projects and deadlines. I used the iPhone Notes app to create to-do lists, track tasks, and organise my workflow—this was a game-changer in ensuring I stayed efficient and focused. Additionally, I received insightful training on how website content works, gaining valuable knowledge in content strategy, audience engagement, and communication best practices. The guidance and constructive feedback from the team helped me refine my skills and gave me a clearer direction for my future career.

Like any role, I encountered some challenges along the way. Managing multiple tasks at once was overwhelming at times, but by staying organised and proactive, I was able to tackle each challenge. One particular challenge I faced was formatting content for the website, as the layout wasn’t appearing as intended. However, I took the initiative to research best practices, and with the team’s support, I was able to resolve the issue and improve the final product.

Working at Be United has been an invaluable experience. I’ve not only gained practical skills in media and communications but also had the opportunity to contribute to meaningful projects that advocate for diverse talent in the Scottish performing arts, screen, and events sector. The hands-on experience, along with the team’s mentorship, has been instrumental in building my confidence and giving me a clearer sense of direction as I move forward in my career.

For anyone stepping into a similar role, I’d say: be yourself, stay proactive, and embrace feedback. Take initiative and don’t hesitate to reach out for help or advice. The more open you are to learning and growing, the more you’ll get out of the experience. And most importantly, enjoy the journey!

Overall, my time with Be United has been both fulfilling and transformative. I’m incredibly grateful for the opportunity to work with such a passionate team and to be part of an organisation that values diversity and creativity. The skills I’ve developed and the lessons I’ve learned will stay with me throughout my career, and I’m excited to apply them in future roles.
